Runner of the Week: Vincent W.

This week's runner of the week is Vincent W. He's a WalkJogRun member that was diagnosed with asthma at a young age and spent a lot of time in the hospital. He's come to a point where he is able to manage the disease and wanted to get in shape and start running. He recently went for his very first run in his marathon training program!

WalkJogRun: Tell us about yourself!

Vincent W.: I have never really been sporty, I was diagnosed with asthma when I was born and spent a lot of time in the hospital when I was young. Over the years my asthma has lessened to a manageable level and now I want to focus on getting fit and losing weight. I'm a film maker myself and love rolling interesting and compelling stories, I want to inspire. Having the incentive of running for such a great cause as the Cystic Fibrosis Trust helps keep me focused.

WalkJogRun: You're a new runner, how did you get started?

Vincent W.: I wanted to lose weight and get in shape, I don't like gyms and running gives me time to think.

Why running?

Vincent W.: I started because I wanted to get fit, I was a little drunk, and a friend of mine was talking about his upcoming charity trilogy for his mother's charity, CF Trust, which is the only charity in the UK that deals specifically with Cystic Fibrosis. I felt compelled to do something to help, so I chose to run the half marathon with him. The charity website is http://www.cftrust.org.uk/.

WalkJogRun: Why did you make a goal of completing a half marathon so soon after starting to run?

Vincent W.: The goal came first, I signed myself up and don't want to let anyone down, I think it's good to challenge yourself.

WalkJogRun: Let's change up the questions a bit. Is there anything you particularly dislike about running?

Vincent W.: The aches and pains that come afterwards aren't fun.

WalkJogRun: What are your running goals?

Vincent W.: To run a marathon eventually. I want to do one in my life.

WalkJogRun: Tell us about your very first run. What was it like?

Vincent W.: I was sitting on the couch two weeks after signing up for the half marathon and realized I need to kick things off. I started by planning a short route around the park but ended up doubling the distance in order to push myself. I enjoyed the run and although it was tiring it felt great to do.

WalkJogRun: Do you have any advice for another running newbie?

Vincent W.: Get up and go for it!
