This week's runner of the week is Mateusz G. from London. He's a bartender who enjoys running when he's not mixing and serving drinks to customers. He is also fluent in Polish and helped us translate the WalkJogRun app description!
Favorite Candy: Dark chocolate with orange, preferably Lindt Chocolate with Sea Salt that I found in Pret-a-Manger. Every now and then I could kill for one of those.
Favorite Quote: It's hard to pick one…. I think I'll go for Calvin & Hobbes: “Sometimes I think that the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact up.” They always make me laugh and think at the same time – marvelous combination.
WalkJogRun: Tell us about yourself and how you got started running!
Mateusz G.: Well I'm a bartender that is looking for a nice workplace here in London where I have moved to a month ago. To tell you the truth the lack of movement in my last job got me motivated enough to start running. I started running on a treadmill, which was more of a punishment than a rewarding exercise for the first two months. But when you live on a ship you can't be too picky right?
WalkJogRun: What helps keep you motivated to run?
Mateusz G.: I try to think I am a stubborn person, especially during my running sessions. I tell myself “one more turn, just cross the bridge and so on,” and music of course, with a rhythm I can use and a melody I know.
Tell us a bit about your racing history and about your training.
Mateusz G.: Unfortunately I haven't raced yet but I'm thinking about singing up for the London Triathlon in September.
WalkJogRun: How much are you running per week? How many would you like to be running?
Mateusz G.: I'm running 40km a week and I would like go run around 60km.
WalkJogRun: What's your favorite distance to run?
Mateusz G.: 4 miles
WalkJogRun: What are your running goals?
Mateusz G.: Run a half-marathon in 6 months and a marathon in 2013.
WalkJogRun: What are your hobbies outside of running?
Mateusz G.: Music (I listen to it non-stop), good food, and photography.
WalkJogRun: Do you listen to music while running? If so, what are the top songs on your playlist right now?
- Away Frm U – Oberhofer – I love the energy of the track
- Seven Seas Blues – Monster Truck – When I'm not rocking there's no fun in running
- Time To Dance – The Shoes – Have you seen the video for this track?
- Good Intentions – Session Victim – Nice gentle track for a warm up
- Easy Lover – Phil Collins – Do I have to say why?
WalkJogRun: What's the best piece of advice you could offer another runner or a newbie runner?
Mateusz G.: Set goals, i.e running a 5k (I was so proud of myself for doing my first 5k ). Reward yourself for achieving them. And as long as you enjoy it keep running.
