Run Chicago, Marine Corps, or New York City in 2014

getting-into-the-big-three-marathonsIf you want to run one of the big three fall marathons in 2014 – Chicago, Marine Corps, or New York – you may need a little bit of luck.

For the first time, the Chicago and Marine Corps marathons are using a lottery system instead a “first come, first served” registration. The New York City Marathon has used a lottery system for years now.

Here are the details on how to enter the lottery – or qualify for a guaranteed entry – for each of the big three marathons:

Bank of America Chicago Marathon
Date: Sunday, October 12, 2014
Cost: $185 for U.S. residents; $210 for non-U.S. residents
Lottery details: Runners can enter the non-guaranteed entry lottery from noon Central Time Wednesday, March 5, 2014 until noon Central Time Monday, April 7, 2014. Lottery entrants will be notified if they got into the race Monday, April 14, 2014.
Qualification standards: Runners may qualify for a guaranteed entry into the Chicago Marathon the following ways:

  • Time qualifier: Men who have run a sub-3:15:00 and women who have run a 3:45:00 marathon on or after January 1, 2012. Race times must be verifiable.
  • Chicago Marathon legacy finisher: Runners who have finished five or more Chicago marathons since 2004 have a guaranteed spot for 2014.

There are also guaranteed spots through official charity programs and international tour programs. Note: runners who meet qualification standards must register for the race during the lottery period (March 5- April 7, 2014).

Marine Corps Marathon
Date: Sunday, October 26, 2014
Cost: $110
Lottery details: The lottery for MCM will be open from Sunday, February 23, 2014 noon Eastern until Saturday, March 15, 2014 at noon Eastern. Runners will be notified if they gained entry to the race or not on Wednesday, March 19, 2014.
Qualification standards: 2,000 spots will be reserved for Active Duty members of the military, and they can register for a guaranteed spot from February 19-22, 2014 on a first come, first served basis. Guaranteed entries will also be available through MCM Charity Partners.

TCS New York City Marathon
Date: Sunday, November 2, 2014
Cost: $216 for New York Road Runners (NYRR) members; $255 for U.S. residents, $347 for non-U.S. residents
Lottery details: Runners can register for the non-guaranteed lottery now until March 18, 2014. Lottery applicants each need to pay an $11 non-refundable processing fee. Runners will be notified if they gained entry into the race or not in late March.
Qualification standards: Runners can qualify as:

  • Time qualifiers: Runners can qualify using a marathon or half marathon time from 2013. Specific time qualifications based on age and sex are on the NYCM’s website.
  • NYRR members who have met the 9+1 or 9+$1k standard: NYRR members must have run nine NYRR races in 2013 and volunteered for another NYRR race or donated $1000 to NYRR’s Youth and Community Services programs.
  • Marathoners who have finished 15 previous NYCMs.
  • Applicants who entered the lottery for three previous years – 2011, 2012, 2013 – and did not gain entry through the lottery or run the race through an alternative method, such as through a charity.
  • Runners who deferred from 2013.
  • 2012 marathon entrants who chose to race in 2014 through the resolution process.

Those who meet qualification standards must claim their spot by the March 18, 2014 deadline. Runners can also gain qualified entry through official International Travel Partners or by running for an official charity.
