Races with the best medals

best-race-medealsWe each have our own reason for running and racing. For some of us, it’s all about the reward at the finish line — specifically, the bling!

Race medals have gotten increasingly fancy over the years. What once was just a fun keepsake has now gained lot of attention. Some runners want to do races based on the medal design alone. In fact, race organizers are starting to unveil the medal months before the race, around the time registration opens, to entice more runners to sign up.

If you’re in it for the bling, you have to check out these races:

  1. Wineglass marathon, October 5, 2014, Finger Lakes region, NY. The Wineglass marathon features a handmade, colored-glass medal that’s beautifully unique. Runners travel across the country just for the chance to earn this medal that looks more like jewelry.
  2. Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-miler, October 4, 2014, Walt Disney World Resort, FL. One of two medals from Disney on this list, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-miler is not your average bling. In 2013, the medal was a glow-in-the-dark replica of the Hollywood Tower Hotel – complete with an elevator that moves up and down.
  3. Nike Women’s marathon, October 2014. San Francisco, CA. If you’d prefer your “medal” to be an actual piece of jewelry, you need to run the Nike Women’s Marathon. Instead of a medal, race finishers receive a finisher’s necklace from Tiffany & Co.
  4. Atlantic City marathon, October 19, 2014, Atlantic City, NJ. The 2012 and 2013 Atlantic City finisher’s medals have featured the iconic Absecon Lighthouse, NJ’s oldest lighthouse. The coolest part of the medal, though, is the red LED light that flashes out of the top of the lighthouse.
  5. Walt Disney World marathon, January 2015, Walt Disney World Resort, FL. All Disney races are known for their themed medals that change every year. If you run the Disney marathon, you’re guaranteed to get a piece of bling with Mickey on it.
  6. Surf City marathon, Superbowl Sunday 2015, Huntington Beach, CA. The Surf City marathon appropriately features a bright, uniquely-shaped medal that’s a mini-surfboard.
  7. Space Coast marathon, November 30, 2014, Cocoa, FL. The Space Coast marathon rewards finishers with an “astronomical” medal showcasing a different space shuttle each year. In 2014, runners will earn the Challenger.
  8. Marine Corps marathon, October 26, 2014, Washington, DC. The ribbon on this patriotic medal is red, white, and blue and 2013’s large, eye-catching medal featured the globe, eagle, and anchor.
  9. Little Rock marathon, March 2, 2014, Little Rock, AR. This marathon is for the “bigger is better” crowd. In 2013, Little Rock marathon race organizers claimed their medal was the biggest in the world – coming in at a whopping 8 inches and 2 pounds, 12 ounces.
  10. Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A marathon, February 16, 2014, Fort Lauderdale, FL. If you love the beach, this medal is for you. The medal is a seashell shape, with one side featuring a beachfront scene, complete with the ocean and palm trees.
