How fit are you? Military-inspired fitness tests

The days and weeks immediately following a big goal race are always a bit of a letdown. While you’re busy trying to figure out what to do next, take some time to have a little fun. You’re already in peak condition, so why challenge yourself with some military-inspired fitness tests? (Or if you’re not at your best, these tests could be a great starting point in your season.)

Military Physical Fitness Tests (PFTs)
Each branch of the U.S. military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard – has different physical fitness tests with different standards. Of course, it takes a lot more than acing a PFT to make it in the military, but doing these tests is just a fun way to see how you’d stack up.

Army Basic Training PFT
All members of the Army must pass this Army Basic PFT to graduate boot camp:

Males:

Age 17-21 22-26
Number of pushups in 2 minutes 42 40
Number of sit-ups in 2 minutes 53 50
2-mile run time 15:54 (7:57 pace) 16:36 (8:18 pace)

Females:

Age 17-21 22-26
Number of pushups in 2 minutes 19 17
Number of sit-ups in 2 minutes 53 50
2-mile run time 18:54 (9:27 pace) 19:36 (9:48 pace)

Army Ranger PFT
Army Ranger recruits must meet the following scores to get into Ranger School:

Test Minimum score Recommended score
Number of pushups in 2 minutes 49 Over 80
Number of sit-ups in 2 minutes 59 Over 80
Pull-ups 6 Over 12
2-mile run time 15:12 (7:36 pace) Sub-13:00 (6:30 pace)
5-mile run time 40:00 (8:00 pace) Sub- 35:00 (7:00 pace)

* Note: Army Ranger PFTs are only for men. But women can still see how they’d fair with these standards.
