Five food trends for 2015

5 food trends in 2015With the New Year in full swing the newest food trends are also starting to emerge. If 2014 was the year of kale (or was it bacon), then what’s next? Well, after a little research, here’s what I discovered are popular trends for the New Year.

  1. Cauliflower: Some are calling cauliflower the new kale. Cauliflower is being used in a lot of different an interesting ways now. Try cauliflower rice as a substitute for real rice or as your next pizza dough. Although it is also delicious raw or steamed and is full of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber.
  2. Turmeric: Turmeric is a root from the ginger family with a yellow tint. It can be found in its root form but is also as a powder in your spice aisle. Turmeric has always been used in dishes like curries, soups, and even as the coloring agent in yellow mustards. But now turmeric is showing up in some unexpected places like smoothies and juices. Researchers have also found eating turmeric with cruciferous vegetables, like cauliflower, may be effective in the prevention of prostate cancer.
  3. Toast: The USA Today just posted an article about the latest craze – toast. As someone who follows many food blogs this is no surprise. Vegan foodies have been whipping up toast with specialty toppings for years now but it seems everyone else has now jumped on the bandwagon as well. If you love toast like me this is welcome news, and if you’re looking for a new topping for your bread, consider veggie cream cheese, mashed avocado, sea salt, and hulled hempseeds for a hearty delicious meal any time of day.
  4. Seaweed: This is another food that has been around forever but is gaining traction. Seaweed isn’t just for your sushi anymore. Seaweed chips are popping up in a multitude of flavors in just about every grocery store and the crunch can be rather addicting. Seaweed is incredibly low in calories, is fat free and contains no carbs. This can make for a great alternative to chips, if you can get past the fact that it tastes like … well …seaweed.
  5. Juice cleanses: Have you ever looked up juice cleanses on Google? There are so many results it can make your head spin. Everyone seems to be talking about the newest juice cleanse, whether it’s delivered to your door or something you make yourself. Does this make it a good idea …jury is still out.

What trends are you seeing pop up for 2015? We’d love to hear from you.
