This summer, my husband and I vowed to drink more smoothies. We live at high altitude and the combination of thin air, heat and working out can cause some serious dehydration. Smoothies felt like the perfect remedy. Two days after we made this vow, our blender broke, of course. I only mention this as an aside because I started making smoothies in our food processor until we got around to buying a new blender. Turns out, food processors get the job done just fine, if you’re looking to keep your kitchen appliances to a minimum.
We finally bought a new blender that includes containers for single serving smoothies, which I highly recommend for easy clean up. (Because, let’s be honest, isn’t it the cleaning of your blender that’s the main deterrents from making morning smoothies, anyway?)
This smoothie contains an ingredient I never would have thought to include had they not been sitting on my counter – red grapes. The combination of the grapes with frozen cherries and strawberries made for a refreshing, fruity, and quite pretty-looking smoothie.
Summer Berry Smoothie
(makes 1 serving)
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
- 1/2 cup frozen cherries
- 3/4 cup grapes, mine weren’t frozen but I’m sure they would work well here
- 1 cup milk of choice
Optional add-ins: 1 tablespoon chia seed or ground flaxseed. A handful of spinach would also be nice for some daily greens but it will make the smoothie a browner color.
- Place everything into a blender and blend until well combine.
- Drink immediately.
